Restorative / Functional neurosurgery includes surgery imroving or regaining the functions of the brain, spinal cord and nerves which were lost due to various diseases. It includes surgery for intractable chronic pain (including cancer pains), surgery for movement disorders like Parkinson's disease, surgery for severe spasticity of various causes, surgery for epilepsy, surgery for psychiatric problems like depression, OCD, surgery for autism etc.

    The surgical procedures I do/plan include :

    1. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) for :

    1. Movement disorders like Parkinsonism, dystonias, essential tremor.
    2. Some psychiatric problems like depression, OCD, and some other psychiatric illnesses.
    3. some types of autism (aggressive types with self harm).
    4. Intractable alcoholism
    5. Chronic pain especially the central post stroke pain.
    6. Intractable epilepsy
    7. Intractable obesity
    8. selected cases of schizophrenia.

    2. Intrathecal pumps :

    1. Intrathecal morphine(ITM) pumps are very useful in:
      1. Cancer Pains.
      2. Failed back surgery syndromes.
      3. Other types of noxious pain.
    2. Intrathecal baclofen (ITB) pumps are good in
      1. All types of spasticity as in
        1. Cerebral palsy
        2. Stroke
        3. Multiple Sclerosis
        4. Severe head injury
        5. Spinal cord injury
        6. Hypoxic encephalopathy
        7. Some Neurodegenerative illness
      2. Patients in persistent vegetative state.
      3. Cases of spino-cerebellar degeneration
      4. Patients with cerebellar involvement in Multiple sclerosis

    3. Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is very useful in:

    1. Refractory .angina/ Intractable heart Failure (Class 3 and 4)
    2. Patients with failed back surgery syndrome
    3. Patients with severe painful diabetic neuropathy.
    4. Patients with brachial plexus injury pain
    5. Patients with severe peripheral vascular disease (limb saving)

    4. Sacral nerve stimulation for sphincter disturbances:

    1. Urinary incontinence
    2. Urinary retention ( non-Obstructive)
    3. Faecal incontinence
    4. constipation
    5. some cases of irritable bowel syndrome

    5. Vagal nerve stimulation for:

    1. intractable epilepsy
    2. refractory depression
